It is ironic that meditators often approach a teacher of his stature with all these theories and expectations they’ve gathered from books —wanting a map, or some grand philosophical system to follow— yet he consistently declines to provide such things. The role of a theoretical lecturer seems to hold no appeal for him. Instead, people seem to walk away with something much quieter. Perhaps it is a newfound trust in their own first-hand observation.He possesses a quality of stability that can feel nearly unsettling if one is habituated to the constant acceleration of the world. I perceive that he is entirely devoid of the need to seek approval. He consistently returns to the most fundamental guidance: perceive the current reality, just as it manifests. In an environment where people crave conversations about meditative "phases" or looking for high spiritual moments to validate themselves, his perspective is quite... liberating in its directness. He does not market his path as a promise of theatrical evolution. It is merely the proposal that mental focus might arise by means of truthful and persistent observation over many years.
I think about the people who have practiced with him for years. They do not typically describe their progress in terms of sudden flashes of insight. It is more of a rhythmic, step-by-step evolution. Long days of just noting things.
Observing the rising and falling, or the act of walking. Accepting somatic pain without attempting to escape it, and not chasing the pleasure when it finally does. It’s a lot of patient endurance. Eventually, I suppose, the mind just stops looking for something "extra" and settles into the way things actually are—the impermanence of it all. It’s not the kind of progress that makes a lot of noise, nonetheless, it is reflected in the steady presence of the yogis.
His practice is deeply anchored in the Mahāsi school, with its unwavering focus on the persistence of sati. He consistently points out that realization is not the result of accidental inspiration. It results from the actual effort of practice. Hours, days, years of just being precise with awareness. He has personally embodied this journey. He never sought public honor or attempted to establish a large organization. He merely followed the modest road—intensive retreats and a close adherence to actual practice. In all honesty, such a commitment feels quite demanding to me. It’s not about credentials; it’s just that quiet confidence of someone who isn't confused anymore.
A key point that resonates with me is his warning regarding attachment to "positive" phenomena. Namely, the mental images, the pīti (rapture), or the profound tranquility. He tells us to merely recognize them and move forward, observing their passing. It’s like he’s trying to keep us from falling into those subtle traps where mindfulness is reduced to a mere personal trophy.
This is quite a demanding proposition, wouldn't you say? To ponder whether I am genuinely willing to revisit the basic instructions and persevere there until wisdom is allowed to blossom. He’s not website asking anyone to admire him from a distance. He simply invites us to put the technique to the test. Sit down. Watch. Maintain the practice. It is a silent path, where elaborate explanations are unnecessary compared to steady effort.
